Passaic County Police: Son Shot Mother Before Overdosing

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) – Passaic County prosecutors say a man shot his mother then overdosed on some type of narcotic drug inside their northern New Jersey home over the weekend.

Investigators say the bodies of 53-year-old Cheryl and 20-year-old Robert Regazzi were discovered inside their home on Gillies Street in Clifton around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

A family friend found the pair and called police.

Clifton detectives are still investigating to determine a motive for the apparent murder-suicide, but a neighbor, meanwhile, told 1010 WINS that the Regazzi family was having financial troubles and facing tough times.

"It's sad. It's tragic. In your own neighborhood, you don't even know if people are hurting like this and if you could have helped them somehow," the neighbor said.

Officials say Cheryl Regazzi was shot once, but further details on her death were not immediately disclosed. And while they believe her son purposely overdosed, the drug he took won't be known until toxicology test are completed, a process that could take several weeks.

Police are asking anyone with information on their deaths to call them.
