NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A 22-year-old man convicted of stabbing his girlfriend to death in her East Harlem apartment in April 2008 has been sentenced.

Prosecutor Jennifer Siegel said Jesus Alejandro stabbed 25-year-old Christina Hernandez — the mother of his son — 26 times, slit her throat, and left her head next to the open oven door with the gas turned on.
It was a scene so awful, said the prosecutor, that the seasoned homicide detective who had to describe it to a jury was fighting back tears.

Judge Gregory Caro sentenced Alejandroto 23 year to life in prison.
Sobbing family members packed the courtroom Monday wearing t-shirts that read “We want justice.”
