Glen Cove Site Cleaned Up For Redevelopment

GLEN COVE, NY (WCBS 880) - The Gladsky Marine Site in Glen Cove used to be one very dirty place.

"It was one of the most highly contaminated industrial areas in New York state," said Kelly Morris of the Glen Cove Community Development Agency.

But now Morris says it's been cleaned up as apart of an EPA conservation program and will soon be included in the town's waterfront revitalization project.

"Cleaning up Mother Nature is a good thing to do, always. It allows us to enjoy a better quality of life," mayor Ralph Suozzi told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. "This helps our region. It helps Long Island. It helps Nassau County."

Morris says the revitalization project will be something special.

"That project includes 860 units of residential, a 250-suite luxury hotel with meeting facilities, a spa, a restaurant, 50,000 square feet of office, 25,000 square feet of retail," she said.

There will also be 20 acres of open public space.

County Executive Ed Mangano praised the project.

"So, you turn blight into opportunity and that's what we are celebrating here today," he said on Tuesday. "Something here that creates jobs and opportunities and nothing can be more important today than to create private sector jobs and opportunities."

Project construction is scheduled to begin next year.
