NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Christmastime tradition is set to take over the city Saturday, as thousands will gather to give meaning to the phrase, “Eat, drink and be merry.”

The annual SantaCon convention will commence Saturday, as crowds of people decked out in their best Santa and Christmas-themed attire will gather at drinking establishments across the cit.

As the official NYC SantaCon Web site states, “Santacon is a non-denominational, non-commercial, non-political and non-sensical Santa Claus convention that occurs once a year for absolutely no reason.”

The kickoff point for the celebration will be announced Friday evening on the official SantaCon website. Event officials are asking this year’s participants to bring along non-perishable food items to the start point for donation.

As the thirsty Santas hit the bars for the Christmastime drinking bash, a tradition which began in San Francisco in 1994, Mr. Claus imitators will also hit the bars in Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.
