NEWARK, NJ (AP / CBSNewYork) – Members of New Jersey’s large Muslim community and some lawmakers are condemning the Lowe’s home improvement chain for its decision to pull ads from a reality TV show about American Muslims.

The head of the state’s largest mosque says a protest is being planned for Friday at the Lowe’s Cos. store in Paterson, home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the U.S.

It’s the same store President Barack Obama visited recently on a tour of the city after it suffered flood damage.

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., says the company’s decision emboldens intolerant Americans and has offended many patriotic Muslims.

Pascrell joined several of his House colleagues in signing a letter from U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the first Muslim elected to Congress, to Lowe’s CEO asking him to stand up against religious intolerance.

“I am disappointed in the Lowe’s Companies’ short-sighted and impulsive decision,” Pascrell said. “They have hurt and offended many patriotic Muslim Americans, and all Americans, in my district and across the country.”

Pascrell said Lowe’s decision to pull its ads from the TLC show “All-American Muslim” after complaints from an evangelical group was contrary to the company’s record of charitable works, especially during the recent flooding that ravaged Paterson, and of creating jobs in economically depressed areas.

New Jersey state Sen. Barbara Buono also sent a letter Lowe’s CEO condemning the company’s action and saying New Jersey’s tens of thousands of Muslim residents were offended. Buono also called the Florida Family Association, which persuaded Lowe’s to pull its ads, a hate group, and questioned Lowe’s de-facto endorsement of the group’s views.

Mohamed El-Filali, outreach director for the Islamic Center of Passaic County, said organizers were expecting several hundred people from New Jersey and other states to attend a Friday protest at the Paterson Lowe’s store.

“It is unfortunate that in the 21st century we still have legitimate organizations like Lowe’s involved in bigotry and allowing a regular program portraying Muslim families in their natural light not to be sponsored,” El-Filali said.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s has stood by its decision to pull the ads after complaints from the conservative group. Lowe’s executives said Monday the company planned to stick by its decision after the show became a “lightning rod for people to voice complaints from a variety of perspectives – political, social and otherwise.”

“All-American Muslim,” which premiered last month, chronicles the lives of five families who live in and near Dearborn, Mich., a Detroit suburb with a large Muslim and Arab-American population.

Pascrell is a low-life politician who stoops to any level to get a vote. Here is a man that stands by Muslims in Paterson, NJ in his district because they are coming in droves. The same people that celebrated when the World Trade Center was attacked, the same people that treat women as third rate humans, the same people that do not accept our customs and traditions in their countries of origin. But, our politicians like Pascrell feed into their fake patriotism while scheming to milk our system dry, and, build up money to dominate and destroy our culture like they have shown in other countries like in Europe. Please vote Pascarell out of office along with his cohorts . America is beng played like a SUCKER! AND IT’S WORKING!

Perhaps they realized the show wasn’t in tune with their demographics? No matter what the case may be, it’s entirely Lowe’s decision to do whatever the hell they want with their money and their ads. Stop your whining and move on.

  3. Dan Green says:

It’s strictly business. Lowe’s wants to avoid controversy, and this show is controversial. If I need something that Lowe’s sells, and I’m in the vicinity, I’ll still shop there. I won’t shop them any more or less frequently. This will also blow-over pretty quickly because a lot of people have no problem with their decision.

  4. bullett says:

Lowe’s has every right to withdraw their sponsorship as they darn well please. However, I have and idea of a new show for Lowe’s called “The New Illegal American” . This way we can find out how they got here and how their sponging off of our system.

  5. RAC says:

I will now only shop at Lowes.

“I am disappointed in the Lowe’s Companies’ short-sighted and impulsive decision,” Pascrell said.

Really, I’m disappointed that we have people like this in our government. This is a free country and Lowes can do what it wants. Stand firm Lowes and don’t pander to these liberal anti-american wack jobs!

  7. MJ says:

the ONLY groups that are bigger wimps than corpoarte america are american politicians. lowes feared that “supporting ” the muslim show MIGHT be bad for their bottom line…..GROW SOME BALLS AMERICA

  8. Tommy says:

I will now favor Lowes over Home Depot. I’m glad someone has the balls to stand up for the feelings of real Americans. It is time we all stop worrying about being politically correct, it is ruining this country. And yes, I say “Merry Christmas” to people, not “Happy Holidays”. I am a Christian – like the vast majority of Americans. We will not be silent while minorities try to hijack this country and call it their own.

    1. Nancy Cole says:

When I hear that a Lowes store has refused to take a customer’s money because the customer is Muslim, I will respect what they did.

Does the company employ any Muslims?

    2. mj says:

being politically correct is what brought lowes to drop their ads not the other waty around

  9. Very conservative says:

    Liberalism is a mental disorder.

  10. BOSTINKS! says:

That show sucks and I will do more business with Lowes now that they decided to stop funding it.

  11. Hiawatha says:

A store has a choice of what kind of Ad it wants since they
    are paying for it.
They never had to do it in the first place.

    1. Jay says:

Right. And I never “had” to do the right thing. Provoking people to intollerance and bigotry isn’t something any corporate leader should have to be instructed not to do.

      Now rant on, Bagger.
