Thousands Expected At NYPD Officer Peter Figoski's Funeral Monday

BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Slain NYPD Officer Peter Figoski's family solemnly filed into Boyd Funeral Home in Babylon to pay their respects on the second day of his wake.

Funeral home director Charles Spencer says the loyalty shown by Figoski's fellow officers is nothing short of admirable.

"These fellas are sleeping here at night at the funeral home. Since we put that flag at half mast he has not been alone," he told CBS 2's Ann Mercogliano.

Figoski was a dedicated father of four girls and a dedicated officer who patrolled the streets of Brooklyn's 75th Precinct for 22 years. He was shot and killed last Monday while responding to a break-in.

Officers from the 7-5 wore white-collared shirts to show their solidarity during their time of grief.

Officer Richard Arroyo worked on patrol with him for nearly 15 years.

"It's just in our nature. We love to help people and we're just here to help people who can't be protected that can't protect themselves," he said.

"He just helped everybody, he was just sweet, raised his family like that and he will be missed," said family friend Liz Mihalik.

Younger officers confessed they looked up to Figoski, and how he met his duty to his girls and his jobs, always with a smile.

"He did his job on the nth degree, and it cost him his life," Spencer said.

As many as 15,000 mourners are expected to attend Figoski's funeral mass Monday morning.
