Time Is Running Out As Last-Minute Shoppers Hit The Stores

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Time has nearly run out for the true holiday shopping procrastinations. Today is the last shopping day before Christmas and for many, it will be a day of panicked purchasing.

At this point, it's very likely someone who's scurrying through the malls and shopping this close to Christmas also has a convenient excuse.

"I was out of the country," said Manhattan resident Charlie Accol. "Yes, I have a good excuse."

"I try, but sometimes it just lapses and next thing you know, it's December," said Richard Hayward Newark.

Retailers, particularly small business owners, are extending their hours to accommodate every last procrastinator.

"They need stuff. It's last-minute shoppers, it's the best," said vendor Victoria Barlow.

Last-minute shopper Kim Turner of Pleasantville says she knows she's running out of time.

"I'm in a panic," she said ."Every corner I turn, I'm trying to pick up something."

According to Consumer Reports, 14 percent of those polled about their shopping habits admit they'll probably throw in the towel and tell a lie such as "I left your gift at home" or "it's in the mail." Twelve percent say they'll simply re-gift.

So you've got to respect someone like Myra Cruz, who's basking in procrastination with no apologies.

"Some people wait, some people don't. I'm one of those who wait," she said.

Many stores have been open for 24 hours a day this past week to accommodate last-minute shoppers.

Macy's in Herald Square is one of those stores that stayed open all night and will keep the cash registers ringing until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve.
