She reportedly told police she awoke to her boyfriend holding the bleeding toddler and repeatedly saying "I'm sorry."

"I am saddened by this tragic and senseless loss of life and extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the infant," Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said in a statement on Friday.

Police aren't yet saying if the boy accidentally shot himself or if he was shot by Bryant.

Officials say Bryant has a long criminal history, including prior weapons offenses. Authorities say bail was set at $1 million.

Mikhy's death was Newark's 90th homicide of the year.
