Newark Starts New Year With Homicide; 45-Year-Old Man Shot To Death

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey's largest city recorded its first homicide of 2012 just hours after the new year got under way.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio says 45-year-old Kenneth McLean, of Newark, was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 5:25 a.m. on New Year's day hours after being shot in the city's South Ward.

Authorities have not offered a motive for the killing.

Mayor Cory Booker tweeted news of Newark's first murder victim of 2012, adding that everyone needs to work for peace, not just pray for it.

DeMaio says city officials will be making every effort to make 2012 safer than last year, when more than 90 killings were recorded.
