Authorities: Inmate Dies After Fight At Nassau County Jail

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate following a fight at the Nassau County jail on New York's Long Island.

Authorities told Newsday that the man died before 7 a.m. Saturday after getting into a fight with another inmate.

The jail is run by the Nassau County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Michael Sposato told the newspaper the man was pronounced dead at nearby Nassau University Medical Center.

Sposato says the other inmate involved in the jailhouse quarrel could face charges.

No other details about the two inmates' identities or the fight were immediately released.

Nassau County Correctional Center can house up to 1,500 inmates.
