Protesters Rally For NYPD Accountability In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- State lawmakers, City Council members and other officials joined community members at a rally Saturday afternoon to call for increased accountability for NYPD officers.

Flanked by photos of bloody protestors and officers swinging wildly, Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams, who was arrested at the West Indian Day Parade a few months back, insisted "this is not an anti-NYPD rally."

Instead, he told WCBS 880's Alex Silverman, "what this is, is a pro-better policing and safer streets rally."

With protesters chanting "NYPD, keep your hands off me," the elected officials and community members called on the mayor and commissioner to sign a resolution acknowledging there's a problem.

Miguel Adams brought his two small children from East New York.

"They have this very beautiful concept of what a cop is. The reality is that there are some bad apples and there's a culture that needs to be fixed," he said.

The rally was held under the Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.
