Report: If Schottenheimer Leaves, Jets Would Eye Sparano, Koetter

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Jets say they want to retain offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

But what if they have a change of heart -- or if he lands a head coaching job elsewhere?

According to the New York Post, New York is building a list of potential candidates in case they need to replace Schottenheimer. Former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano and Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter are on the list, the paper reported.

Schottenheimer interviewed for the Jaguars' vacancy at head coach Friday.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum said last week that they "expect" Schottenheimer to return next season. That is, unless he's hired for a top job elsewhere.

The 38-year-old coordinator has been under fire for running an ineffective and inconsistent offense which finished 25th overall.

"I think the criticism specifically about Brian," Ryan said, "I believe, is unfair."

Schottenheimer has also been heavily criticized for his failure to develop quarterback Mark Sanchez.

"To say that you're considering making a change, that's not helpful for Brian," said Ryan. "He's under contract as the offensive coordinator. It's certainly going to help his chances of being a head coach."

Would Sparano or Koetter be an upgrade at offensive coordinator? Sound off below...
