NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — If you’re a parent with a child on Facebook, police on Long Island have a warning for you.

Nassau County Police said a 26-year-old man lured a 13-year-old girl to his house using Facebook and raped her, CBS 2’s Kathryn Brown reported.

Saul Reynaldo Reyes targeted the girl through a mutual friend on Facebook, using the connection to befriend his young victim and lure her to his house and rape her, police said.

Anne Donnelly, chief of Nassau County’s technology crimes unit, sees predatory behavior far too often and said what happened between Reyes and his alleged teenage victim should serve as a wake-up call to all parents.

Donnelly is encouraging parents to not only keep track of their kids’ online profiles, but to go a step further: Know their passwords, “friend” their friends as well, and establish a nighttime charging policy for all electronics.

“If you take it out of their rooms and into a central place where you can check before you go to bed that it’s being charged up, you might cut down on some of that late-night activity,” Donnelly said.

It’s a tactic not all teens are thrilled about, reported Brown.

“My parents are thinking about getting a Facebook … I don’t want them to get a Facebook, but if they do then obviously I’ll accept their friend request,” said 15-year-old Jenna Kaminsky.

“Our principal gave us all the speech — anything you wouldn’t want your grandma to see don’t put it up, so I totally abide by that,” said  Hope Glassman, 15.

Police, parents and prosecutors are all hoping more attention will save another teen from becoming another victim.

Three of Deborah Weinrib’s children are on Facebook, and she admitted that keeping tabs on them isn’t easy, Brown reported.

“I’d like to say that I’m one of these stalking mothers, but I’m really not. I talk to my kids a lot and I’m very involved in their day-to-day, so I can only hope,” Weinrib said.

Reyes is charged with second-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child.

Are your kids on Facebook? If so, do feel you they are safe?

Here we go again. Mike Bloomberg is deliberately and ILLEGALLY exporting New York City’s crime to the suburbs. Everybody knows that REAL Americans live in suburbs, and therefore CRIME BELONGS IN CITIES. New York City owes us big time for imposing its crime on us.

Headline should read “Complacent Parents Allow Children to Use Facebook”.
If you wouldn’t allow your children to walk alone in a mall or other public area, why would you let them have a Facebook account? While no child deserves pain, the parents deserve a lifetime of guilt and anguish for the consequences of their poor decisions. The fault is as much theirs as it is the rapist’s.

What does it mean to “charge” a computer? Never heard that phrase before. Since when does one have to charge or charge up a computer, like a battery I suppose?

    1. Bklyn mom says:

Laptops need charging. So do handheld devices that lots of kids use to access Facebook – iPhone, other smart phones…

for this lowlife – time to bring back some of the best of the spanish inquisition. the court appointed lawyer can just sit down. to all the parents of teenagers – this social network stuff should have been questioned a long time ago. there need to be alot of safeguards and monitoring by YOU. used to be the question was “it’s 10 pm do you know where your children are?” now it’s “it’s 3pm in the afternoon, do you know what your children are plugged into. i never had a phone (let alone a cellphone), tv, computer (heck tv was just black & white “back in the day”) growing up. obesity wasn’t an issue because we played outside, and weren’t overscheduled. everybody needs to grow up and get smart now. those who don’t learn from today’s history, are fated to be victim to it.

This is not a fb issue. This is a issue of parents not knowing whats goin on in their childs life. My kids, 10 and 8 have fb accounts. Before they are allowed on fb we scan their pages and look at what they are talking about. We also do not allow them to add/be added by people without our approval. Also how does a 13 yr old just leave and go to a guys house. I just dont get it.

    1. Bklyn mom says:

I don’t get why a 10 and especially 8 year old NEED a Facebook account! I have a 10 yr old son. Whatever he has to say to his friends can be said on the phone or in person at school. Period! Doesn’t Facebook have a 13 or 14+ policy?

I AGREE! AND WHY DO THESE KIDS NEED CELL PHONES? ARE THEY DOCTORS? ARE THEY ON CALL?
GIVE ME A BREAK. THEN THEY WONDER WHY KIDS END UP MISSING,KIDNAPPED, RAPED AND KILLED.
STAY HOME, LIKE I DID BACK IN THE DAYS. I WASNT ALOUD TO GO OUT LIKE THESE KIDS TODAY HAVE SO MUCH.

Facebook is not a safe place for children. It took 2 months and contacting a child welfare group to get rid of a page the catered to pedophiles.
Parents can’t rely on anyone but themselves.
You wouldn’t let your child hang out in a bar but will allow them to hangout with people they don’t know on Facebook.
    Wake up folks!

Everywhere you will find parent apathy, too many kids having kids and irresponsible parents

I’m afraid that Jerry is correct.
        Extremely sad state of affairs.

I hope that the victim gets good counseling, and can move on to have a productive life. I know of some rape victims who never seem to recover (b/c they didn’t get adequate counseling).

As far as the suspect, I’d be delighted if someone shot him in the head and dumped him in the river (b/c he’s nothing but a useless piece of garbage).
