Rutgers Instructor Accused Of Using Office Computer To Distribute Child Porn Videos

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Rutgers University biochemistry instructor is accused of using his office computer to spread hundreds of videos of child pornography over the Internet, prosecutors said.

Gavin Swiatek, 49, was arrested Tuesday at his Hillsborough home and charged with second-degree distribution of child pornography and fourth-degree possession of child pornography.

He is being held on $50,000 bail.

"Those who view and distribute child pornography contribute to the tragic exploitation of children, because they fuel the demand that drives suppliers to produce these abhorrent materials," said Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.

State police determined Swiatek was using peer-to-peer technology to share the videos, prosecutors said.

Swiatek faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge.

University officials say Swiatek -- a biochemistry instructor on the Rutgers University Cook Campus in New Brunswick -- has been relieved from his teaching duties and barred from returning to campus.

A decision on whether he will be fired has not yet been made.
