City Council Votes To Give Grace Period For Muni-Meter Parking, End Alternate Side Violation Stickers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- City Council has passed what they're calling a fair parking legislative package consisting of three bills aimed at making parking a little easier in New York City.

Speaker Christine Quinn says one bill would force a traffic enforcement agent to cancel a ticket on the spot if it were issued while the driver was in the process of paying at the Muni-Meter.

"You'll be able to show your receipt to the agent. If it's only been five minutes or less, that agent will void our ticket electronically on the machine they have," said Quinn.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to veto that measure. The council promises to override.

But Bloomberg is still deciding whether to sign the measure to end the practice of putting stickers on windows of vehicles ticketed for violating alternate side rules.

"In addition to the ticket, you've got a big neon sticker smacked on the side of your car," said Quinn. "What's the point of that sticker? It's not making the city any money, it's not going to move your car. It's really just to embarrass you."

Bloomberg says he will sign a third bill that prohibits late fees on parking tickets that are being challenged.
