Officials: 2 Suspects Arrested In Robbery, Murder Of Newark Grocery Store Owner

NEWARK, NJ (CBSNewYork) -- Authorities say two suspects have been arrested in the armed robbery and murder of a grocery store owner in Newark.

Police arrested 18-year-old Isiah Adams and a 16-year-old on Monday in connection with the shooting death of 37-year-old Miguel Torres.

On Jan. 17, authorities say the two walked into the JNC mini mart on 14th Street in Newark and shot Torres several times as he handed over cash during the robbery. Torres later died at the hospital.

"The reckless behavior and disregard of human life demonstrated by these criminals will not be tolerated in the City of Newark," Police Director Samuel DeMaio said in a statement.

"He was a respectable guy. Really generous, really kind," said neighbor Rahkeem Zarif.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said surveillance video and the public helped police identify and catch the suspects.

"In addition to the extraordinary work done by law enforcement, we want to thank members of the public for coming forward and assisting in this investigation,'' Murray said in a statement.

Officials say the teen is also charged in a second, unrelated murder and robbery of 36-year-old Wilfredo Campos, who died Jan. 3 after being shot on Dec. 28, 2011.
