VIDEO: East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo In Hot Water For 'Taco' Quip

EAST HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy weighed in Wednesday on controversial remarks made by the mayor of East Haven.

Four East Haven police officers were arrested and charged with mistreating Latinos yesterday.

The same day, Mayor Joseph Maturo was asked by a television reporter "What are you doing for the Latino community today?"

"I might have tacos when I go home, I'm not quite sure," Maturo responded.

Maturo has since apologized, and said that his comment was taken out of context.

Malloy called Maturo's comment "repugnant."

"They represent either a horrible lack of judgment or worse, an underlying insensitivity to our Latino community that is unacceptable," Malloy told the CTPost.com. "Being tired is no excuse. He owes an apology to the community, and more importantly, he needs to show what he's going to do to repair the damage he's done. And he needs to do it today."

"It was stupid, it was insensitive," Maturo said during a radio interview Wednesday. "I gave my detractors... a reason to make matters worse with a 'gotcha' and an insensitive and stupid answer to something I should have never said."
