Westminster Dog Show To Welcome 6 New Breeds This Year

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Say hello to the new pups on the block.

The 136th Annual Westminster Kennel Club dog show returns to Madison Square Garden in just a few weeks and six new breeds are ready to make their big debut.

A parade of pooches marched their well-groomed paws across 7th Avenue in Midtown on Thursday afternoon, hoping to be named top dog at this year's show.

The new breeds include:

  • American English Coonhound (represented by "Game Changer" of Queens)
  • Cesky Terrier (represented by "Katrina" from Manchester, New Jersey)
  • Finnish Lapphund (represented by "Myles" of the Bronx)
  • Entlebucher Mountain Dog (represented by "Hoss" of Cincinnati, Ohio)
  • Xoloitzcuintli (represented by "Alma Dulce" from New York City)
  • Norwegian Lundehund (represented by "Eowyn" from Syracuse, New York)

Some of the breeds have been around for hundreds of years, but they've only been newly recognized by the American Kennel Club. The question is will they have what it takes to take best in show?

"It's never happened. It's a tough road for these new breeds. They're here to be seen, mostly, and to have a good time and show the world what they're all about," David Frei, the Director of Communications for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, told CBS 2's Katie McGee.

The Westminster Kennel Club dog show takes place Feb. 13 and 14 at Madison Square Garden.
