L.I. Man Accused Of Wrong-Way Driving While High On Prescription Drugs

BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- State police arrested a Long Island man Friday morning accused of driving the wrong way for several miles on the Southern State Parkway while high on prescription drugs.

No injuries or accidents were reported in the 2:30 a.m. incident.

The driver, identified as 28-year-old John Brooks of Huntington, was arrested after State Police received multiple reports of a wrong-way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the parkway in Suffolk County.

Brooks was charged with driving while ability impaired.

He was given a desk appearance ticket to return to court on Feb. 13. The name of his attorney was not immediately available.

State Police say Brooks admitted taking prescription drugs earlier. They say he failed a sobriety test and was arrested.

"He pulled over without incident. He realized what he was doing eventually and we were able to arrest him. Pretty much, he admitted to taking some prescription medications and we sobriety tested him and arrested him," New York State Trooper Frank Bandiero told 1010 WINS.

The specific prescription drug was not immediately available.
