NEW YORK (WFAN) — Jets coach Rex Ryan wants his stars to iron out their differences.

We’re not sure this is what he had in mind.

Mark Sanchez broke the ice early Wednesday morning by tweeting a photo of a heart-shaped box of shortbread cookies to wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

“@santonio10 you want to be my Valentine?” the quarterback posted.

Holmes, inactive on Twitter since Feb. 9, has yet to respond.

Several New York players have recently spoken out regarding the toxicity in the Jets’ locker room, particularly the rocky relationship between Holmes and Sanchez.

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson said the turmoil was the worst he’d ever seen.

Holmes was benched in the final minutes against the Dolphins in Week 17 after a spat in the huddle.

“I think it was an isolated incident” Ryan told WFAN’s Mike Francesa last month. “I don’t think it was pervasive throughout the locker room.”

A guarantee kicked in last week on more than half of Holmes’ $11 million salary for 2013 ($7.5 million). Add that to the $7.75 million already guaranteed for 2012, and the Jets are on the hook for at least $15.25 million over the next two years.

The Jets have said that they plan to retain the embattled 27-year-old wideout.

What do you make of Sanchez’s tweet? Sound off below…

Mark Sanchez is making a sincere effort to make things right. You sure can’t say that about the other guy now, can you! Santonio Holmes is not in Pittsburgh for a reason. And they practically gave him away! I’m in Mark’s corner all the way! J-E-T-S… JETS! JETS! JETS!

As Irsay said about Peyton, they’re just being politicians (& by the way so is Irsay). Both these guys are business people who make more in a year than most of us commentors will see in a lifetime. They know that the public’s perception of them and their value is a very important chip at contract time. So is being a winner. If Sanchez wanted to communicate with Holmes there are a lot of private options. In going Twitter you are calling him out in front of the whole world; what we know of Holmes suggests that is not likely to produce a positive result.

What a sad situation. The two clowns responsible for a total team chemistry melt down now choose to joke about a situation that destroyed our team. Only on a team called the NY JETs
