Detective Kevin Herlihy said he "feels lucky" as he was greeted by two long rows of applauding police officers while being wheeled out Wednesday from New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center.
Mike Palladino, president of the Detectives Endowment Association, said he had a chance to speak with Herlihy before he left the hospital.
"He knows that he's very lucky and I'm sure that he's anxious to get back to work," said Palladino.
Once back home in Lynbrook, Herlihy thanked his supporters and said he was looking forward to spending time with his wife Adrienne and their three children.
"I feel good," he said.
Herlihy was shot in the bicep Tuesday while exchanging gunfire with a 52-year-old suspect, Michael McBride, who was shot in the chest and killed.

Officers were following McBride when the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon at the 145th Street subway station in Hamilton Heights.
Police said he was wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting of his girlfriend's daughter the day before in Queens and was being tracked by the Queens Warrant Felony Squad.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said McBride, a paroled felon, went to his girlfriend's home where he got into an argument with her 25-year-old daughter. Kelly said McBride shot the woman in the head and fled the scene.

The woman was taken to North Shore University Hospital where she is listed in very critical condition.
Police said when McBride realized he was being followed, he took off and then turned and fired four to six shots at police, hitting Herlihy in the arm. Kelly said Herlihy returned fire, shooting McBride in the chest.
The suspect was taken to the hospital where he later died. No one else was hurt.
"He not only survived but was able to stop his assailant from shooting anyone else. I want to thank the doctors and staff here for their excellent care of Detective Herlihy and for their dedication to the community at large," Kelly said in a statement.
Cops said McBride had an extensive arrest history and was on parole for robbery.
