NEW YORK (WFAN) — It appears J.R. Smith is the newest member of the Knicks’ boosted backcourt.

The free agent guard posted via Twitter Friday morning: “New York Knicks It Is!”

Smith recently returned from a stint in China, where had been playing since the lockout without an NBA opt-out clause. The 26-year-old averaged 12.5 points per game on 42.8 percent shooting over seven seasons with New Orleans and Denver.

The Knicks now need to free up a roster spot. According to the Post, Renaldo Balkman is “expected” to be the odd man out.

“New york was great love da big apple #imout,” Balkman tweeted just before noon Friday.

Unbelievably, the New York  Daily News reported Thursday that Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin “would have been the most likely candidate” to be released had he not been given a chance to ignite the team nearly two weeks ago.

The Knicks have won seven games in a row behind Lin since Feb. 4.

The Post also reported Smith will make his Knicks debut against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

A first-round draft pick in 2004, Smith would likely receive the team’s $2.5 million cap exception.

Great move by the Knicks — or are they tinkering too much with their newfound chemistry? Sound off below!

Great move… I’m all Lin..but we needed some depth. Whether he’s the starting 2 guard or the 6th man this is a great move. Unless you guys prefer to have Renaldo

Good move by the Knicks. We can’t be fooled even if the Knicks are winning now. If the Knicks are to be relevant in the payoffs we need another scorer. He can play and he also can’t be left alone. He can hit the 3 or create his own shot. Right now the Knicks have alot of players on the bench who are not a factor. J.R. Smith would be an immediate factor. To compete with the Bulls, Heat, Magic and Celtics we need a big time team in New York who have big time experience. They need to play “D” and move the ball and everything should work out. It’s a growing process it should work. It will work! Let’s Go Knicks!!!

the knicks during this stretch have been a top 5 defensive team look it up buddy

The Knicks just added another one-dimensional player, they’ll score 110 ppg but they’ll give up 111. They thought that they could get far with two All-Stars, but both Amare and Carmelo are overrated one-dimensional players. These types of players do no lead a team to a championship – unless the coach instills a defensive mentality.

Dolan simply can’t leave well enough alone. If it doesn’t work, we can’t fire the SOB…
