Family Of Marie Colvin, Journalist From L.I. Killed In Syria, Starts Memorial Fund

SYOSSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The family of a journalist from Long Island who was killed in Syria has established a memorial fund in her honor.

Oyster Bay native Marie Colvin died Wednesday in a rocket attack on the besieged city of Homs. The 56-year-old was an award-winning journalist who worked for Britain's The Sunday Times.

Colvin grew up in Oyster Bay and had been working for The Sunday Times for more than 25 years. She was at the forefront of international reporting and lost her eye from a shrapnel wound in Sri Lanka in 2001.

Her family has now set up a fund with the nonprofit group Long Island Community Foundation to support charitable causes in her memory.

Colvin's cousin, Maureen Marron, told the Times Union of Albany that Colvin was "smart,'' "sophisticated'' and "fearless.''
