Councilwoman Takes Aim At Electric Bikes

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A city council member is vowing to crack down on illegal electric bikes in New York City. Councilwoman Jessica Lappin says that she has received a number of complaints from residents.

Lappin is proposing legislation to raise the current $500 fine to $1,000. The bikes are illegal if they go faster than 15 miles-per-hour.

"We're talking about bikes going 30 miles per hour on the sidewalk, going the wrong way down a one-way street, that is incredibly dangerous," said Lappin. "I have been hearing overwhelmingly from constituents that they're afraid of these electric bikes."

The bill is expected to be introduced on Wednesday.
