NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Muslim leaders met with Police Commissioner Ray Kelly on Tuesday after shows of both opposition and support for the department’s surveillance of Muslims in and around the Tri-State Area.

Most of those who emerged sang Kelly’s praises, reported 1010 WINS’ Al Jones. Others who have been critical didn’t attend.

1010 WINS’ Al Jones reports

On Saturday, students and activists loudly denounced the policy at a protest on Wall Street. On Monday, members of the Muslim community rallied at One Police Plaza to show their support for the NYPD.

Thirty-six groups, including some that are faith-based and others that are student-led, have sent a letter asking New Jersey’s Attorney General to immediately investigate Muslim monitoring by the New York City Police Department in Newark and other cities.

The call for an investigation sent Tuesday mirrored similar requests made last week in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and elsewhere.

The letter to Attorney General Jeff Chiesa asks New Jersey to investigate the extent to which local police assisted the NYPD and whether the New York department broke any New Jersey laws, such as the Wiretapping Act.

Some Muslims (claiming to speak for all) support the surveillance. Other Muslims (claiming to speak for all) oppose it. Well, which is it? Do they support it or not? What is THE Official Opinion of All Muslims?

  2. David says:

I 1000000% support Police Commissioner Kelly and what he’s done, and continues to do, to keep us safe. William’s response to D Parker above said it well – lets not pretend we weren’t attacked by islamic militants, OK?

I’m sorry to the innocent muslims who feel as if their freedoms are being infringed upon, but it was our attackers who brought this needed security upon us, not the NYPD. If you are an honest, law abiding muslim, I do not see why you need to feel threatened.

Unless and until Jews, Christians, Mormons or any other faith decide to kill innocent people in the name of their religion or beliefs, it is NOT racism or intolerance behind the surveillance – its common sense and GOOD policy, as William eloquently stated.

God Bless you, Commissioner Kelly, and keep up the great work!!

For those muslim leaders who attended this meeting have just proved they do not have nothing to hide.

  4. Vincent in S.I. says:

God bless you Commissioner Kelly and all the wonderful cops of the NYPD for doing what you do to keep me, my family, and all us New Yorkers safe. in spite of all the political correctness nonsense.

The Muslims that complain need to be investigated ASAP because they probably have some hidden agenda. All we ever needed to know about Islam we New Yorkers learned on 9/11.

Vincent – love the last line of your comment. Poetic. Could I use it to make up t-shirts for sale?

  5. William says:

This is way beyond what Ray Kelly needs to do. He owes NOBODY an apology or explaination for keeping us and our children safe. We owe HIM an apology for not appreciating his efforts in keeping us safe since 2001…… Our way of life can sometimes bite us in the A$$ at times..

  7. D Parker says:

it Amazes me how much hate you idiots come here and show, deport us to where ? this is my country, i was born here so my parents and my great grand parents. It does not mean i am a muslim i am not an american.

    1. William says:

Let me tell you something.. The ignoramous of the Muslim community who have a problem that the Feds and NYPD are watching them FOR THE BENEFIT OF PUBLIC SAFETY are the ones that are creating these negative and hateful comments. The fact that 15 Muslim men murdered over 3,000 people cannot be disputed. The fact that Al Quaeda as twisted and evil as it is, IS an organization of MUSLIM terrorists .If they were martians, they would track martians… Are we clear about that. If your biggest enemy is made up of Muslim men, it is LOGICAL that if one is attempting to track down Islamic Jihadist or A Quaeda members, one needs to watch the actions of MUSLIM MEN….. Does that make sense??? Yes or NO?????!! Why channel the anger towards Ray Kelly?? What about protesting the existance of Al Quaeda which perverts the name of Allah and Islam??????…

    2. PETE says:

D Parker, you also amaze me in your stupidity. If you are a Muslim first, and then an American, your ancestors probably entered through the wrong door! It is quite simple: We are going to send you back where you came from. Back to the desert where you can sleep in a tent and wait for the next sand storm. For sex, you will have plenty of sheep around. You do not want that? Then shut your mouth and start studying the American Constitution, and not the Koran! You will be enlightened by it, and thank Allah that he has created this American Country!

Oh just tell them stinky diaper heads we’ll make amends by burning a few copies of Hustler, High Society, and/or Playboy magazines.

  9. vince a says:

Hold your ground Commissioner! You need not justify your actions or apologize to anyone! The White House occupier does enough of that already.

Your actions are keping US citizens, (including Muslim citizens, whether they like it or not), safe, secure and ALIVE! If they don’t liek it, they should leave the United States and move to a country that is more accomodating and respectful of its citizens. Good luck finding one.

Keep up the excellent work Commissioner!

The FBI and DEA use gang members to harass suspects. Several corrupt DEA and FBI are angry that I complained to the San Francisco Attorney General’s office. I complained that they where fabricating evidence and stealing from me. They also poisoned my dog to death.

I do not think that the FBI or the DEA have authority, but several told me that if I did not stop complaining about the stealing, I could end up in rendition. U.S. Government employees use the threat of rendition to extort money from suspects.

Meeting with Ray Kelly and negotiating? Why and for what? Deport these DERVISHES, but do not forget to give them postage on their way home, so they can send us a postcard!!
