Dharun Ravi's Police Interrogation Played For Jurors In Court

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Prosecutors played a video Wednesday of the police interrogation of Dharun Ravi, the student accused of spying on his roommate's intimate encounter with another man.

Ravi talked to police the day after his Rutgers roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge.  As CBS 2's Christine Sloan reports, the video included some of the following exchanges.

Investigator: "He possibly committed suicide. He left some stuff behind -- some belongings. We have no contact with him...the evidence is pointing to the fact that, that probably did occur, but we're not 100 percent sure."

Police went on to tell Ravi they know he used a webcam to spy on Clementi making out with another man in their dorm room.

Ravi: "We go to the computer and like we turn it on...and in the corner of the screen we see a, we barely see, we saw like someone's back. It was like obvious that they were being intimate of whatever. So we closed it immediately...and like I just felt really uncomfortable."

Frustrated, the officer tells Ravi to tell the truth.

Investigator: "Is it safe to say you invaded his privacy?"

Ravi: "Well yes but..I didn't realize it was like something so private. It was my room also."

Investigator: "You violated his privacy."

Ravi: "Yes, I did."

Investigator: "And you did it deliberately..."

The disc was played for jurors in court as Clementi's mother tried to hold back tears.

Ravi: "The guy walks in, he's like...he seems kinda older."

Just before killing himself, Clementi told friends on Facebook he was going to jump saying he was "sorry." Minutes later, Ravi sent Clementi a text message that said "I'm sorry if you heard something distorted and disturbing, but I assure you all my actions were good-natured."

Ravi, who is charged with invasion of privacy and bias intimidation as a hate crime, had to be comforted by his attorney during a break.

Ravi has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He said he was using the webcam to keep an eye on his belongings. Prosecutors also presented evidence they said shows Ravi deleted more than 80 text messages he had sent to friends about the webcam and Clementi.
