Is The Floor Of The Times Square Subway Station Clean Enough To Eat Off Of?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A top Metropolitan Transportation Authority official testified about subway cleanliness on Tuesday and proudly proclaimed the Times Square subway complex is so clean you could eat off the floor.

Hilary Ring, director of governmental affairs, made the comment before a City Council transportation hearing.

Councilman Peter Koo disagreed, describing some stations as filthy messes.

Straphangers seem to agree with him.

"I don't know about these floors but I smell vomit sometimes and you see rats on the tracks," one man said.

"So much stuff on it, it's just filthy, I would never eat off of this floor," one woman said.

Reaction on CBSNewYork.com's Facebook page was also pretty intense.

"I want to see that MTA official eat off of that floor," Joanne Brak wrote.

"We should use his tongue as a mop!" wrote Dave Franke.

Another MTA official acknowledged the stations are cleaned daily but mopped less frequently.
