Earlier this week, New York City Transit president Thomas Prendergast said the agency was considering the installation of the sliding platform edge doors that open when a train is in the station.

But now MTA chairman Joseph Lhota is saying hang on a minute.

"The idea came out at the transit committee meeting. They're quite expensive and given the 496 stations, I think that's the number, it'd be quite prohibitive," Lhota told WCBS 880 reporter Rich Lamb. "We'll look at a lot of things, but it's not something I think we'll see, quite honestly, in your lifetime or my lifetime, but we will look at it."

In 2011, 147 riders were hit by New York City subway trains.
