Female Suspect On L.I. Seen Wearing Mets Cap During Bank Robbery

BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An alleged bank robber on Long Island apparently has plenty of team spirit.

Police said the suspect sported a Mets baseball cap during one of the alleged incidents, but that isn't her only distinguishing feature.

The suspect was seen in a surveillance photo demanding the opening of cash drawers. Twice in the last week, a woman robbed a bank in Suffolk County.

It happened last week in Babylon and again on Wednesday in Chase Brightwaters.

Police said it could be the same person, an unlikely bank bandit in the most peaceful of villages.

"In both cases she was wearing different clothing, but in yesterday's case she happened to be wearing a Mets cap," said Suffolk County Police Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.

"I thought it was remarkable and really does make a statement about how desperate people are right now," one local resident told CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff.

Police said in both incidents the robber appeared to be in her 40s, with light brown or blonde hair. In both incidents, a baseball cap, sunglasses and a sweatshirt were worn. Both times, the woman made her demands for cash known without saying a word and without showing a weapon.

"In both cases, a note was passed to the teller demanding cash," Fitzpatrick said.

The FBI also released its annual statistics on bank robbers and it seems women are catching up to their male counterparts. Currently, 1 in 10 bank robbers are women, but it may be more. In many cases, cops haven't been able to tell the gender.

Also, according to the FBI's latest report, bank robberies most often occur on Friday mornings.

"Why should one be surprised? Criminality among women has been on the increase," resident Walter Greenberg said.
