Historic Ferrara Bakery & Cafe In Little Italy Prepares Christians For Easter

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Christians are preparing for the holiest day of the year, and some bakers and shoppers are making sure that traditional treats make it to the dinner table after services are over.

The front door at Ferrara Bakery & Cafe in Manhattan's Little Italy never seems to close, with customers coming through to buy baked goods and large orders carried out by delivery men.

Baker Franco Amati says he started 10 days ago to prepare Italian traditions for the Easter rush. Some of his favorites include pasta de grano, casa bella, struffoli and colomba pasquale.

Nancy Renzulli told WCBS 880's Monica Miller that she drives into the city every Easter weekend from Berkeley Heights, New Jersey to help her family feel tied to their Italian roots.

"My mother used to always make the wheat and rice pies to really remember her mom," Renzulli said. "Everything is tied into the tradition of remembering her parents, who used to have a little store just like this. And my tradition is staying firmly Italian."

Ferrara Bakery & Cafe is a fifth-generation family-owned business.
