Wild Shootout In Brooklyn Leaves Four Cops Injured

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Police got into a wild shootout in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn starting late Saturday night into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Police commissioner Ray Kelly says the chaotic scene began outside of 3301 Nostrand Avenue after Nakwon Foxworth , a 33-year-old tenant, got into some kind of dispute with a moving company.

Foxworth barricaded himself, his girlfriend and their four-month old child inside their apartment for two hours, holding them hostage. It was only after the woman grabbed the child and made a run for it that Emergency Service Unit cops went inside to try to nab Foxworth. He shot at them 12 times, injuring four of the cops. The officers managed to shoot Foxworth back, critically wounding him.

"He struck detective Michael Keenan in his left calf, detective Kenneth Ayala in the thigh and foot, police officer Matthew Granahan in his left calf and captain Al Pizzano sustained a graze wound to his face," Kelly said at a news conference following the shootings.

Kelly says Foxworth had a cache of weapons inside that apartment, including a rifle with a scope and 50 rounds of ammunition.

Foxworth faces a number of charges including menacing, attempted murder, assault on a police officer, and criminal possession of a weapon.

"Until Congress wakes up and finds some courage to stand up to the gun lobby, illegal guns will continue to end up in the hands of dangerous people, like tonight's shooter who had a small arsenal of illegal guns," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at the news conference. "And if that means we have to start calling Senators and members of Congress in the middle of the night when we get these shooting calls, maybe we should just start doing that."

Bloomberg said he's going to continue his fight to get Congress to act.
