One Person Killed, Another Seriously Injured In Queens Fire

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A fire quickly spread through the first floor in a home on 189th Street in the Auburndale section of Queens just after 4:30 on Sunday morning, killing one and leaving another seriously injured.

Resident John Ribecci managed to crawl out of his home, but his cousin, 63-year-old Joanne Brown, didn't make it out.

"John's been a longtime resident here, at least 40-plus years," one neighbor whose known the two for 20 years told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. "And she moved in about 10 years ago. They're both single, they both had medical issues, and they lived together to offset the cost of living and to watch each other and help each other."

There's currently no word on what may have caused the fire.

"Until we determine the cause -- and the fire marshals are the experts -- it will be suspicious," FDNY battalion chief Daniel Murray said. "They're going to make a determination of what the cause was, and they're investigating as we speak."
