Report: New Booting Technology Targeting Scofflaws To Debut In NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City may begin targeting scofflaws with some new technology.

If you owe more than $350 in unpaid parking tickets, the city is going to try an alternative to towing. The Daily News reports the city will likely debut smartboots next week.

Drivers will be able to pay over the phone and will then be given a release code. You're car won't be towed, but drivers will still have to return the boots.

"Well maybe the boot might be a better way because the tow truck messes your car up when it tows it," one driver told WCBS 880's Sean Adams.

"A smartboot is better because you don't have to wait for them," said another driver. "You just call and in a way, it's a good idea."

The smartboot might save you a little time, but definitely not money. If you add up all the fees, drivers will still have to dish out about $300.
