Two Men Arrested, Charged In Connection With DWI On Long Island

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Two men were arrested on Monday and charged with a number of crimes in connection with a suspected DWI on Long Island.

Authorities observed a 1995 Lincoln sedan cross over a center divider on Route 25, east of Southern Boulevard in Smithtown shortly before noon.

When the vehicle was pulled over Paul Lucente, 30, of Kings Park fled the scene and left his 4-year-old child in the backseat, according to police. Lucente was eventually caught.

Police found that the driver Benjamin Laudonio, 26, of Stony Brook was under the influence of drugs.

Lucente was charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree and one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Laudonio was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while Impaired by Drugs, Aggravated DWI with a Child Less Than 16 Years Old, which constitutes a felony under Leandra's Law, Third Degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle, and Seventh Degree criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.
