Expectant Moms In The Bronx Get Points For Baby Supplies By Attending Classes

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - At the Stork's Nest room at the Union Community Health Center in the Bronx, expectant moms get points for attending prenatal classes.

The moms-to-be attend Lamaze and yoga classes and learn about proper nutrition.
The points for attending those classes can then be used to get bottles, diapers, wipes, high chairs, clothing, car seats, and other supplies to care for children, reported WCBS 880's Marla Diamond.
"It makes it fun because it encourages you to go. You know that you're being rewarded. It's like when a kid is in school. He does good in school, you get rewarded," said Bronx mom Brenda Ouyor, who just graduated from the program.
The Zeta Phi Beta sorority created Stork's Nest with the March of Dimes in 1972.
Zeta Phi Beta relies on donations to help the moms, many of whom could not otherwise afford a car seat to take the baby home from the hospital.
Zeta Phi Beta member Lillian Castro told Diamond that they don't just want to educate the women, but also want to provide a service.
"Making sure you're encouraging the mom regardless of her situation," Castro told Diamond.
