Officials Investigating Deadly Mastic House Fire

MASTIC, N.Y (CBSNewYork) -- A late night house fire in Suffolk County has left two people dead and third critically injured.

Around 11:15 p.m. Thursday, firefighters were called to a home in Mastic after getting a 911 call from a neighbor. When they arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

It took crews nearly two hours to put out the blaze and firefighters were able to pull three people from the home.

Douglas DeSouza, 64, his wife, 64-year-old Barbara DeSouza, and a third man were all taken to the hospital where the two men died. Barbara DeSouza survived, but is listed in critical condition.

Suffolk County Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said every possible effort was made to rescue the victims.

"The Mastic Fire Department arrived, several of their firefighters went in and made a heroic effort," Groneman said.

Investigators said the deadly blaze appears to be a tragic accident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
