Mastic Woman Dies After Being In Critical Condition Following House Fire

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Barbara DeSouza, who was critically injured in a fire at her home in Mastic on April 26th, died on Sunday at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Suffolk County Police said.

Around 11:15 p.m. on April 26th, firefighters were called to the houseafter getting a 911 call from a neighbor. When they arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

It took crews nearly two hours to put out the blaze, and firefighters were able to pull three people from the home.

DeSouza, her husband Douglas and a third man were all taken to the hospital, where the two men died.

Suffolk County Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said every possible effort was made to rescue the victims.

"The Mastic Fire Department arrived, several of their firefighters went in and they made a heroic effort," Groneman said.

Investigators said the deadly blaze appears to be a tragic accident.
