NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Police are looking for a gang of teenagers who they said stabbed a 15-year-old boy with a kitchen knife in the chest early on Friday night.

Cops said that a pack of 10 or more teenage boys -- as many as 20 -- chased the boy on the basketball court behind P.S. 299, with the victim trying desperately to escape over an eight-foot-high fence. He was cornered and then pummeled with bottles and sticks before being stabbed. Police found the bloody knife on the playground.

The boy was taken to Kings County Hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

Gang activity is believed to be connected to this incident not only by police, but also by residents of the neighborhood. Some of those residents were too afraid to speak with 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck about what happened for fear of repercussions from those involved.
