Christie Would Veto A Measure Decriminalizing Possession Of Small Amounts Of Marijuana

READINGTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Gov. Chris Christie said that he would veto a measure decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Christie made the comments at a town hall event on Friday in Readington. It's the first time that Christie, a Republican and former federal prosecutor, has publicly taken a position on the issue.

Christie said that he's focused on implementing a strict state medical-marijuana program. He added that easing up on pot laws would be contrary to that goal. He also said that the state shouldn't undercut federal drug laws.

An Assembly panel in May unanimously approved a measure making possession of 15 grams or less of the plant a civil offense, punishable by a fine rather than a criminal offense.

A vote in the full Assembly was postponed for amendments.
