Wakir Bryant Indicted In Newark Toddler's Death

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man has been indicted in the shooting death of his girlfriend's toddler son.

The Essex County prosecutor's office announced charges Monday against 28-year-old Wakir Bryant of Belleville.

Bryant faces five counts, including reckless manslaughter, in the death of 2-year-old Mikhy Robinson.

Prosecutors say the child, who was the son of a woman Robinson was dating, died after being shot in the mouth Dec. 30 in a Newark apartment.

Robinson's mother reportedly told police she awoke to her boyfriend holding the bleeding toddler and repeatedly saying "I'm sorry."

Prosecutors said Bryant drove Robinson and his mother to a nearby hospital, where the boy died.

The charges also include endangering the welfare of a child, hindering apprehension and two weapons offenses. A separate indictment charges Bryant with possession of a weapon as a convicted felon.

He remains in custody on $250,000 bail.
