Giant, 600-Foot Ferris Wheel Being Considered For Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - New York City may be getting a big new tourist attraction.

According to reports, an investment group is looking at building a gigantic Ferris wheel - some 600 feet tall - near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the attraction would dwarf the London Eye, which is 443 feet tall, and draws some 3.5 million visitors a year.

Plaza Capital Group Management reportedly pitched the idea in response to a request for proposals from the city to develop parking lots near the terminal.

The Ferris wheel pitch hasn't been approved yet.

However the Staten Island Advance reported that at least two of the borough's representatives on the City Council back the project.

Councilman James Oddo told the paper that if the project went forward, "It's got a chance to really become iconic."
