CC Sabathia Placed On 15-Day DL, Expected To Miss 2 Starts For Yankees

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Yankees will have to make due through the All-Star break without ace CC Sabathia.

Sabathia has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an adductor strain near his left leg, the team announced Wednesday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects the 31-year-old to miss two starts. Freddy Garcia will start in his place Friday against the Chicago White Sox.

"He doesn't want to go on (the DL), but he understands it's the best thing to do," Girardi said before Wednesday's matinee. "Missing two starts is better than seven or eight."

Sabathia felt a tweak in his groin during Sunday night's no-decision against the Mets, but didn't tell the team until after his bullpen session Tuesday. An MRI later revealed a Grade 1 strain.

"He's a competitor, he wants to be out there, he feels like he can pitch with it right now," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "But we're not going to mess with it."

The left-hander is 9-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 15 starts this season.
