Yankees Claim RHP Farquhar Off Waivers; Gardner Taking It Slow

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- The Yankees have claimed right-handed reliever Danny Farquhar off waivers from the Oakland Athletics and optioned him to Double-A Trenton.

The 25-year-old Farquhar has played for both the Toronto and Oakland organizations this season. He was 1-3 with a 4.46 ERA with Triple-A Sacramento, Oakland's top farm club.

To make room on the 40-man roster, New York transferred outfielder Brett Gardner to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday. Gardner has had a couple of setbacks in his recovery from a right elbow strain.

Manager Joe Girardi said Gardner most likely will return after the All-Star break. He has been out since April 18.

Gardner could start taking swings next week in Tampa, the New York Post reported.

"I'm not so worried about what date I get back," Gardner said, according to the Post. "I'm thinking more now about just getting a bat in my hands and getting back to normal. At this point, I can't afford any more setbacks, so I'm sure they'll make me take it slow."

Farquhar, a 10th round draft pick by Toronto in 2008, made his big league debut in September for the Blue Jays.
