New York Yankees Visit Bronx Nursing Home For HOPE Week

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The New York Yankees are continuing HOPE Week, their annual effort reach out to New York City area communities, and they got a little help on Thursday, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

Teammates Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner, David Robertson and their wives teamed up with the Glamour Gals from Lehman High School in the Bronx.

The Glamor Gals organization's mission is "to inspire and organize teens to provide ongoing complimentary beauty makeovers and companionship to women living in senior homes."

So, today, they went with some of the Bronx Bombers to the East Haven Nursing Home.

Swisher even gave one woman a manicure.

"You know, my grandparents meant the world to me and they're here anymore and to be able to come back here and to see people like this and to spend time with them and even if they don't know who we are, at least we're sitting down here BSing for a little bit," Swisher told Diamond.

"I've filed some nails already. I might go paint some nails or help with some makeup here in a little bit," said Gardner.

He said it felt great to give back.

"They're obviously really excited about us being here and just try and bring a smile to their face," he said.

Glamour Gals founder Rachel Doyle was proud of her teens from the Bronx.

"They are special and sometimes they don't get to hear that," Doyle told Diamond. "You know, you hear all of bad stories in the news, the kids who do all the bad things."

The players even surprised Doyle with a $10,000 donation.

"Sports and fashion - this is a whole new level," she said. "It's always the unexpected things that make the most interesting stories."

HOPE stands for Helping Others Persevere & Excel.
