Smoke Reported In Elevator Shaft Of Newark Airport Air Traffic Control Tower

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Officials have lifted the "ground stop'' at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport following a report of smoke in the control tower's elevator shaft.

Flights couldn't take off or land at the airport for a brief period Tuesday. Federal Aviation Administration deputy assistant administrator Laura Brown said air controllers are managing air traffic at an alternate site.

The smoke is now gone and controllers are expected to return to their normal posts in the tower shortly.

The ground stop has caused flight delays around the country.

The air traffic control tower at Newark Liberty Airport has been evacuated after a report of smoke in the elevator shaft.
