Police: L.I. Man Drives Car Onto Golf Course, Hits Carts, Causes 'Extensive Damage'

MANHASSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man has been arrested after police said he caused "extensive damage" when he drove his car onto a Manhasset golf course.

Chris Meier, 49, is charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and aggravated driving while intoxicated.

Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Meier "intentionally drove" his Ford Taurus onto the Deepdale Golf Club golf course, hitting at least two occupied golf carts, Nassau County police said.

He then drove around the course until his car got stuck in a sand trap, according to police. That's when officials said he tried to take off on foot, but was stopped by club employees who held him there until cops arrived.

No one was injured, but police said the damage he allegedly caused to the course is estimated to be "well over $10,000."

Meier is set to arraigned Wednesday.
