The Latest Superfood Craze: Pitaya

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- From pomegranate to coconut water to Acai - the list of so-called "superfoods" keeps growing.

So what's the latest one that has health nuts hungry?

Pitaya - it's a pretty pink fruit with lots of little black seeds - and it's said to pack a powerful punch.

"It's very mild in flavor, lightly sweet, it tastes great, and is actually proving to be full of really healthful antioxidants and fiber," said Carin Gorrell, Self magazine's nutrition director.

The fruit is also said to help with type 2 diabetes and regulate blood sugar level, since it's very rich in soluble fiber.

"It's supposed to aid with digestion, because it's very rich in pre-biotics, which are basically food for the healthy bacteria that live in our gut," said nutrition expert Jenny Matthau, the president of the Natural Gourmet Institute. "It's supposed to help lower cholesterol."

But as some experts explain, the fruit has yet to be tested to see if it lives up to its hype.
