Connecticut School Removing Joe Paterno Mural, Quote

OXFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - A mural featuring the now late former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has graced the walls of the Great Oak Middle School in Oxford for 20 years.

But that's coming to an end, WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

Paula Guillet, who chairs the board of education there, said that at the time 20 years ago, the school decided on featuring various role models and quotes from them on the walls of the school.

But she said sentiment for Paterno has waned since he was fired and a report said that he covered up child sex abuse at the hands of assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted of the abuse.

"I don't think it takes away from the good things he's done, but there is consequences for people's actions," she told Schneidau.

She said the mural will be painted over before school resumes in the fall.

No decision has been made on who will replace Paterno on the gymnasium wall.

Other murals in the school feature Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Anne Frank, and Mother Teresa.
