Emaciated Puppy Found Stuffed In Suitcase In Mt. Vernon

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Talk about a sick puppy.

The SPCA of Westchester said early Wednesday they were contacted by the Mt. Vernon Animal Shelter. The shelter said someone had dropped an emaciated pit bull/lab puppy at their doorstep. The pooch was found stuffed in a suitcase.

Mt. Vernon staffers said the pup was so undernourished it couldn't stand.

The puppy is believed to be 7 months old. It weighed 16 pounds. A typical puppy that age would normally weigh 40 pounds.

The puppy is receiving emergency treatment, but it's not clear if the animal will survive.

The SPCA of Westchester said though that surveillance video from near the scene showed an Akita/pit bull mix being dropped in the same spot just a few hours earlier. That animal did not require emergency care, but was taken to the Mt. Vernon shelter.

The SPCA of Westchester is asking for the public's assistance to find the person or persons responsible. Anyone with any information on either incident is asked to call the SPCA of Westchester's confidential animal cruelty hotline at 914-941-7797.
