Trial For 1st Of 8 Soldiers In Hazing Death Of Pvt. Danny Chen Begins In N.C.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The mother of a Chinese-American soldier testified Tuesday at the court martial of an army sergeant accused of hazing her son, who killed himself in Afghanistan.

Su Zhen Chen testified about what she called her good relationship with her son at the trial of Army Sgt. Adam Holcomb of Youngstown, Ohio. Holcomb was the first of eight U.S. soldiers the military said it would prosecute in connection with the death of 19-year-old Danny Chen.

Holcolmb faces several charges, the most serious of which is negligent homicide. Authorities say Danny Chen shot himself last year in Afghanistan after being hazed for weeks over his ethnicity.

Holcomb's attorneys said when trial opened that his actions didn't cause Chen's death. The defense has argued that Chen had a strained relationship with his family.
